As a design & tech consultancy, The Pixel Division stays on top of emerging trends so we can help our clients make informed decisions.
The Lab is where we experiment and study the latest developments across the industries we’re involved with. We seek to understand new technology, research new applications of existing technology, and explore new markets and industries.
We’re researching ways to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) & machine learning (ML) into all forms of software. Specifically: deep learning, inference, boosting, and AI-driven image-processing algorithms.
We are especially interested in AI/ML-like approaches that use ‘boring’ technologies like SQL, ElasticSearch, etc. AI & ML get all the hype, but there’s much to be gained from simpler Pareto-optimal approaches that leverages proven infrastucture.
We believe that UX is the most imporant leverage point in most software systems, and it’s also the most misunderstood.
Our UX practice is about finding ways to simplify, to better incorporate user research, and increase the value of UX across the board. To do this, we research fundamentals & history of UX, find better ways to educate designers, and discover design process improvements – theoretical, conceptual, and practical.
High-quality, on-time, and under-budget.
That’s the constraint-satisfaction problem software engineers face everyday. To make this demanding situation easier for our clients, we study new approaches to:
We’re continuously experimenting with new frontend architectures & frameworks. Our bias with frontend tech leans toward anything that simplifies frontend development and reduces bloat
Our work on all the major platforms lets us cross-pollinate the best techniques & concepts from one platform to another.
Recent Lab frontend work includes experiments with desktop VR, mobile / Web VR, real-time 3D, and shaders.
We’re also looking at better ways to write pure-functional web frontends, to reduce friction when using frameworks like React & Vue.JS, along with their ecosystem of support libraries like Redux, Vuex, and so on.
With every year it becomes easier to build simpler, more powerful server infrastructures.
Nowadays there are so many services to choose from, and many of the big problems have been solved multiple times over. We find that the difficulty is in picking the right mix of backend technologies and connecting & configuring them correctly.
We’re always searching for the holy grail of backends: a simple way to quickly build entire services that scale with just a small team. Luckily the industry has never been closer to achieving this goal.
